the problem with working at large corporations is that everything has to be done a certain way. There’s little autonomy.
They will destroy you so that they could meld you into what they needed you to be.
company culture should be about allowing employees to bring their authentic selves to work and to celebrate that.
building that in a remote team can be hard if you use the old school methods. what I find works well is to remove hierarchical setups. there need to be leaders but leaders get out of the way of their employees and make space for their employees to be their best selves.
here are the things our team is responsible for. I can offer recommendations on how we do them but I want honest feedback and criticism and open dialog on how we can do them most efficiently.
if anyone is feeling burnt out work with them to find their place, and if their place happens to be outside the team, then work with them to find that perfect match.
it feels like we are so hyper focused on building tools and technology to solve our problems. we neglect what is truly important in the human experience.
What are we doing? We built all this technology to improve our lives. But at what cost?
realtalk tho, i think I'm kind of just in shock of how different this is. the whole onboarding process is absurd. at battleface i was welcomed and greeted by a smiling Nate who walked me through setting everything up. here my manager forgot that i couldn't unlock my laptop until he got on a call with me and walked me through just setting up all my Amazon accounts and passwords and security key
I'm trying to train people up in a new way of thinking and development. when we switch off to doing hacking they're losing time to learn the new system.
implementing new standards on top of old code is very difficult. there is a lot that could break for any given change. it's a high mentallosd to keep track of all the pitfalls in the app.
Reviewing things in a group during the meeting is a bad practice.
Also, having the entire team in all of these meetings seems like a huge waste of time.
Just asynchronously ask people to review the tickets that are relevant to them.
